Dual Plated Challenge Coins

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

A great touch to your challenge coin design is to use two different platings on one coin. The majority of coins are plated in one color which is gold, silver or copper. Dual plating gives coins a distinctive look which is classic and visually appealing.

There are many times a coin design is best suited to be done in gold, but the design has some silver highlights. Instead of using a paint to mimic the silver areas, we can actually plate those areas in silver. This adds to the appeal of the custom made challenge coin by making it even more attractive.

Dual Plating Combinations Offer Plenty of Choices

There are many combinations to choose from. For example, many customers choose silver and gold, silver and copper or gold and silver. One of the most unique plating combinations is the use of both black nickel and gold on the same challenge coin. This color combination really has great contrast.

Outstanding Challenge Coin Designs Require Thinking Outside the Box

A perfect example is a challenge coin produced for one of the Flight classes out of Maxwell AFB. They wanted a black nickel coin. However, the coin design includes a 2D Lt bar that must be done in gold. Instead of using a gold paint to color the Lt bar, we plated the bar in high polished gold. The result is one outstanding challenge coin.

Transform the look of your challenge coin by using two different types of plating on your design. Visit today to see examples of dual plated challenge coins. Martial Arts Challenge Coins Demonstrate Skills

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Martial Arts is one of the oldest sports in the world and is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the world. We worked with the Bahala Na Filipino Martial Arts Association to produce a coin for all of their students and instructors. Each side of the coin is dedicated to a different discipline offered by the school. This allows everyone involved in the sport to get the recognition that they deserve.

Challenge coins are being used in many different fields and to represent many different activities. That’s what makes them so desirable. Because they are custom made, they are unique and memorable. No two customers will have the exact same challenge coins created. This allows each martial arts studio to have a distinct gift item to hand out.

Custom challenge coins can be any size or shape. They can feature a decorative edge or a 3D emblem. Designs can be printed on both sides of the coin or just one depending on your preference. You can even have the challenge challenge coins sequentially numbered if you’re interested in raising the perceived value of your awards. Details like these enhance the appearance of your custom challenge coins.

Challenge coins can be given to members of a martial arts studio upon enrollment or as students reach a particular milestone or master an achievement. They can even be plated differently as a way of differentiating between awards. For example, there can be gold, silver, and copper colored challenge coins. Each will have its own set of criteria that needs to be mastered before being awarded to a student. This keeps men, women, and children focused.

Emergency Management Challenge Coins

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

We produce challenge coins for all aspects of government. Just about every agency has a challenge coin developed that is specific to them and them alone. In recent times there has been a substantial increase in the attention paid by both Federal and local governments to being prepared for emergency situations. The emergencies can be of both natural and man-made origin. This increase in attention has lead to the development of CERT.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.  CERT is not agency specific; many local, county, state and federal agencies have become part of CERT.  Therefore many of these agencies are having challenge coins designed that show they are now part of CERT and prepared to assist in any situation.

An example comes from Burlington County, New Jersey’s Office of Emergency Management. We helped them design a coin that features the CERT logo on one side and the county specific logos on the other. This challenge coin is awarded to all the members of the county that have trained for and passed the needed requirements to be recognized as member of the county OEM CERT team.

Custom challenge coins are great for identification purposes.  They are also incredible awards.  People feel privileged when they receive such an honor.  Not only are they willing to display their coins, they are also known to carry them.

Do your part to honor the men and women that serve your community.  Visit today.  If you need more information or have a question you want answered, you can call 1-800-252-0904 toll-free or email

3D Images Help Challenge Coins Look Detailed and Realistic

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Our graphics team faces quite a few challenges when designing a customer’s challenge coins. Some of the biggest challenges come when the request is for the coin to be produced using a 3D mold.  Although it appears to be an easy process, it is actually one that requires a lot of skill.

A 3D mold goes beyond the one raised level and one recessed level of the traditional coin. When a coin is produced using a 3D mold the image being portrayed literally jumps off the coin. A 3D mold adds to the depth of the detail possible. The roundness of a globe, the veins of a leaf or the contours of a building can all be felt when on a challenge coin with a 3D mold.

One of the most interesting 3D molds we have created was done for the United States National Support Element in Lisbon, Portugal. The idea they had for the coin consisted of geographic locations that they work near to or are important parts of the regions were they are located. They sent us an image that simply had a bunch of photographs’ pasted to it. Our graphics team was able to meticulously redraw each photo and position it onto the face of the coin design.

Once the customer approved the design it was our production departments skilled sculpturers that made the coin design come to life.  Detailed and attractive, 3D images make challenge coins even more collectible.  Individuals receiving this type of coin feel like they are receiving something really honorable.  That’s why it’s not unusual to see 3D molded coins displayed in homes and offices.

Packaging Options for Challenge Coins

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Along with the designing and approval process of your challenge coins, another important aspect to consider is the packaging options for your coins.  Packaging can be as simple as a PVC envelope that nicely stores the coin and protects its finish, to a custom made velvet box that houses the coin in a very attractive manner for display and presentation purposes.

Your packaging options are as follows:

  • PVC Envelopes – A PVC envelope is a clear plastic pouch with a folding top. As the name implies the design is similar to a mailing envelope. It has a folding tab around the top that allows for the coin to be kept inside of the envelope without the risk of it sliding out. PVC envelopes are convenient and keep the coins protected from scratching when all the coins are inside a box or container together. The PVC envelope also allows for the both sides of the coin to be viewed without the need of removing the coin from the envelope.
  • Velvet bags – Velvet bags are becoming very popular. They are an appropriately sized velvet bag with a draw string top. They are great for handing out coins at events were many coins will be distributed.  Simply reach into the container and hand the recipient a small bag that can be easily be placed inside a pocket or purse. They are also very nice for events were the coin will be placed at a dinner seating. The bag can be sat next to the name card on the table at each person seating location.
  • Acrylic capsules – A coin capsule is a clear hard plastic piece that is meant to be a permanent housing for the coin. The capsule, once sealed shut, will always protect the coin from scratches, dings and other surface damaging possibilities. The capsule is practically the same size as the coin and allows for the coin to kept as a carried piece in a pocket, purse or wallet.
  • Velvet coin cases -The velvet coin case is the most attractive of all the display cases; it is much like the kind of velvet case that a ring or bracelet would be sold in. The velvet case is great for handing out at awards ceremonies to those persons receiving the top awards. It allows the coin they receive to stand out from those handed out for lesser accomplishments. A velvet case and coin will proudly be displayed on the desk or mantle of any person it is awarded to.

Visit today to see the different types of challenge coins we offer and pictures of the presentation options mentioned here.  Make sure to tell your sales representative about the velvet boxes or acrylic coin cases you want to order when submitting payment and finalizing your challenge coin design.  Call 1-800-252-0904 or email with any questions you have.

Offset Printed Challenge Coins Offer Options

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Many times customers present an idea that can be produced as a coin; however, it is too detailed to be produced through the standard minting and stamping process.  For these types of designs we are able to print the image onto the coin using the offset printing process.  Offset printing is done directly onto the metal surface of the coin. The printed surface is then covered with an epoxy coating to protect the printed image.

The beauty of using an offset printed image is that it can be combined with the standard stamping process.  An example is the coin we helped the Historical Association of Lewiston design. The outer rim of the front of the coin is produced through the standard minting/stamping process with raised and recessed metals.  The center however is the printed image of a painting that depicts the Battle of Queenston Heights.

This coin presents a perfect example of a design that cannot be produce by traditional means.  However, we were able to create it as a coin by employing the offset printed process.  This shows just how flexible we are in terms of artwork and design.  Almost any idea you have can be created into a custom challenge coin rich with detail and personal meaning.

Offset printed challenge coins are the perfect option for businesses, organizations, schools, military units, and groups wanting an exact image duplicated in their design.  You can learn more about the cost of this style of challenge coins by visiting  You can see samples and also get an idea of the pricing of these unique and exciting coins.

Entertainment Industry Challenge Coins Are Show Stoppers

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Challenge coins have taken course that goes beyond use in the military world.  They have made an easy transition to the corporate sector as military personnel started finishing their duties and entering the corporate sector and bringing with them the idea of using coins.  Lately we have been producing coins for a brand new customer base– the entertainment industry.

We have produced custom challenge coins for movies, video games, TV shows and most recently a standup comic/slash celebrity impersonator.  John Morgan ( has made a name for himself as the top impersonator of George W. Bush. He had us help him create a custom coin that he can present to the corporation and entities that hire him to perform.

One side displays the faux presidential seal bearing his name; the other was left as a blank area where he can include the logo of the company, group or organization that has hired him. This allows him to sell more than his shows to his customers.  He can leave them with a coin that forever displays his performance at their event.

Custom challenge coins for entertainers are practical and memorable.  They heighten the experience by giving participants something tangible to take home with them.  Audience members can look at their custom challenge coins and instantly remember details about their day or evening out.  Entertainers can either hand the coins out or sell them after the event is over.  Either way, they make a great impression on their fans by having custom challenge coins at every arena they are headlining at.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard Challenge Coins

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

The NAVAL security team in charge of protecting the Norfolk Naval Shipyard contacted us for a coin design.  The shipyard is one the biggest in America and therefore protection is of the upmost importance.  The security team wanted both their badge and the OPSEC logo on the coin. Our graphics team was able to create a coin that is unique to this security team and this team only.  That’s one of the most appealing things about custom coins.  They can be made in a way to reflect the groups, businesses, and organizations that they have come to represent.

The challenge coin that we created was rich in color and detail.  One side shows the team’s affiliation with the Navy.  The other side features a fierce looking dragon along with “OPSEC” and “Protecting Information”.  Details like these make it easy to know who the coins were created for and what they will be used to promote.  Incorporating a design on both sides of the coin allows teams to dually identify themselves.  It is something that many customers appreciate because they are able to select two images and sets of text to represent their event or special department.

Custom challenge coins can be handed out as a way to help boost morale.  Members of security teams feel valued when given a token of appreciation.  These small recognition items help Naval security officers feel important which leads to satisfactory results within the team.  Items like a challenge coin go a long way in recognizing the day-to-day sacrifices made by team members.

Presentation options like velvet boxes and acrylic coin cases add a level of professionalism to the awards.  They also make it easier to store and protect the coins from damage.  We offer a variety of presentation options to our challenge coin customers.  You can visit to see samples of them.

Plating Color Options for Your Custom Challenge Coin Design

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

If you don’t know much about custom challenge coins, you may ask how you can make yours unique enough to accomplish everything that you set forth to do this year. For example, if you want your coins to award specific accomplishments throughout your business or organization, you’ll want them to look different enough that others notice. One of the ways you can do just that is through different plating options.

High polished gold, silver, and copper are a few of the choices you have when it comes to creating custom challenge coins. We also can use antique gold, silver, and copper to plate your recognition awards. Black nickel and high polished nickel are two more options that you have that can set your challenge coins apart within your business or organization. Employees that are honored for their accomplishments perform better, stay with a company longer, and inspire other workers and volunteers to be their best. Competitors at different events also love the challenge of taking home the grand prize.

Many times the challenge coin design itself will determine what plating color is best suited for the custom challenge coin. However, you can take the same design and plate it different ways in order to create more options with one coin. This allows you to get the best value and also gives you the opportunity to acknowledge more than one set of people. For example, we created a coin for a military poker tournament that is being created in four different plating colors. Three of the plating colors will signify the recipient’s placement in the tournament and the fourth will be used as a souvenir of the tournament.

Visit today to request a free price quote and full color digital proof. You can direct your questions to or call 1-800-252-0904 toll-free. We will be more than happy to assist you with your request and can even give you pointers on ways to make your challenge coins stand out even more in a crowd.

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

The Southern California Rugby Referees Society provides the officials for all rugby games played in Los Angeles and Orange County, San Luis Obispo, Tucson, Las Vegas, and San Diego. The group ordered coins to hand out to its members. The coins are kept as a type of commemorative ID for the referees.

All the members of the SCRRS are referees whom officiate amateur, collegiate, and professional rugby matches. On the back side of the coin, there is information about the Southern California Rugby Referees Society. You’ll see the customer’s name, URL, and logo. This allows both groups to be represented on one coin. Although images can be limited to one side of the coin, most people prefer using both sides of the coin because it helps extend their message.
